LONDON: CAUSE-ORIENTED DANCE-OFF CAPITAL OF THE WORLD?

The right to free speech/peaceful assembly/dance showdown is alive and well in London. Thus, within the same week and on the same streets, the city hosted the dueling dance crews of:

The Michael Jackson Memorials and the Hare Khrishnas

Surprisingly, it wasn't a rout in favor of The Gloved One. The memorials were already set up in front of the Picadilly HMV when the HKs suddenly came round the corner in full force and dropped a totally infectious beat and groove. The Jacko fans (mostly teenage girls) came back with "The Way You Make Me Feel" and the most high-pitched "Yiiii-heeeee"s you've ever heard in your life.

The Religious and The Fabulous

Actually, there was no real run-in between the two, but they did both pass right by the embassy, and it was hard to tell who was having a more fun time. One side rocked on while the other just danced the night away.

And in case you're wondering - although as a diplomat, I'm not supposed to take sides - the clear winner in all of this is . . .

The Eighties!!!!

No, scratch that. When Boy George performs "Karma Chameleon" for free in a West End park right next to the theatre showing "Thriller: The Musical" - we're all winners.
